The Sustainable Niche Tourism Learning Expo, organized by USAID and SLTDA at Amaya Hotel and Resort in Pasikudah, garnered praise from small business operators in Sri Lanka’s tourism industry. With over 100 attendees, including associations and chambers, the event marked the fourth in a series held nationwide. Participants gained insights from successful niche tourism models in countries like Bhutan and Mongolia, learning about effective promotion strategies. Sessions covered digital marketing, travel trends, and sustainability integration, with mentoring and toolkits provided for product development.
Sri Lanka’s diverse tourism offerings present opportunities for small businesses to cater to both international and domestic travelers, crucial for post-pandemic recovery. With tourism contributing 12% to GDP pre-pandemic and a notable resurgence in arrivals, Sri Lanka aims to capitalize on niche tourism categories introduced in June 2023. Niche tourism not only enhances destination experiences but also promotes inclusivity. Supported by USAID’s Indo-Pacific Opportunity Project, the expo signifies a positive step toward economic recovery and investment facilitation in Sri Lanka’s tourism sector.
